#2021ISSTVIRTUALSUMMIT
SCHEDULE
DAY 3 SATURDAY JUNE 26th SEGMENT 6: 3.00 - 3.30 TRACK 1: Enmeshment and the Undeveloped Self Schema and the Impact on Relationships: Clarifying the Blurred Lines Between Self and Other with Jeff Conway |
We will consider some possible ways the Enmeshment Schema contributes to what we often describe as an Anxious Attachment or an Avoidant Attachment Style. This webinar posits that for a person who has a prominent Enmeshment Schema, the possibility of creating a closer bond based on understanding and a respect for differences is undermined by a tendency toward boundary confusion and a diminished sense of personal agency, both of which are fueled by this Schema. It is this emotional and cognitive experience that can cloud and obscure the rich opportunities available in a primary relationship. We will also consider how to talk about this Schema with our patients and ways to facilitate a shift towards a deeper attunement of self and other and a fostering of interpersonal autonomy which are essential ingredients for the development of a satisfying and secure bond.
