Day 3: Coping with Chaos: Schemas and Modes During the COVID-19 Crisis
5.45 - 6.15 pm
Central European Time
Abstract: Plague and other disasters are strong threats to the very basic need of human beings: survival. The most basic needs may be unmet at these conditions. And lackness of food, water, clothing and shelter is not the only threat at these kind of catastrophes. The chaotic feature of the deprivation also triggers another kind of schemas and coping behaviors. This is the point that sophisticated and socialised abilities of Healthy Adult mode is bypassed and more basic defense mechanisms are activated.
The sense of chaotic or unfair feature of the deprivation varies according to the individual’s ability of perceiving the justice. If this ability is broken with a strong Mistrust schema, then it is likely that these individuals are ready to activate these aggressive coping mechanisms even there is no chaotic situation around. Some examples of these acts that are observed during the plague are despoliation, excessive stacking, manipulation to be at privileged and advantageous positions to be cured or examined.
In this online workshop the coping mechanisms and their relation with the level and the fairness of the deprivation will be discussed. Especially, narcissistic and psychopathic defenses and their functions in chaotic and non-chaotic environments will be shown.
