Workshop 1: Saturday Early Afternoon and Saturday Late Afternoon (S2W1 & S3W1) - 180 Minutes

Fine Tuning Empathic Confrontation and Limit Setting Part 1 & 2

by Hannie Van Genderen and Remco Van Der Wijngaart

Aims:

Schema therapy and limited reparenting are often associated with warm, compassionate care.
Many clients, however, developed survival strategies in their youth, which are often experienced as inconvenient or annoying by others. For example, avoidance or overcompensating patterns.

In these cases, limited reparenting as a warm attitude will often not be sufficient. In those situations, good care requires therapeutic skills to confront empathically and set limits.
Many schema therapists find this difficult because this will put pressure on the client - therapist relationship. This can trigger schemas such as Failure, Self-Sacrifice or Subjugation with the therapist. This can lead to late or insuffiecient empathic confrontations and setting limits.

Teaching Methods:

Based on the above, the goal is to try out these more robust forms of care in a safe atmosphere with many practical exercises and humor as the tools.
The workshop will make use of the recently developed teaching material 'Schema therapy, step by step' and demonstrations by the teachers.

Learning Objectives:

In this workshop, participants will acquire the following skills:

- Refining skills for empathic confrontation and setting limits
- Tips and tricks to make setting limits easier
- The slightly different attitude that is required compared to other aspects of Limited Reparenting - Discovering your own limits when you have to set limits
