    — VIENNA CONFERENCE NEWS —

One of your selections at the conference for

Friday Morning, July 1st from 10:45 to 12:15 is:

"Differentiating Between a Parent Mode and an Overcontroller Mode"

A "Sneak Peak" by David Edwards

    - Click picture above to see interview -

Negative voices (punitive, guilt-inducing, demanding, etc.) are often introjects from parent or authority figures and located in parent modes. They may also be part of overcompensatory modes: a "perfectionist" overcontroller incorporates rules that set standards as well as self-critical and demanding messages that motivate the individual to attain them. Such modes may begin in childhood where they shut down vulnerability to protect the child from hurtful behavior from adults.

David Edwards gives a "Sneak Peak" in an interview by Travis Atkinson of his Vienna workshop, explaining how existing parent messages may be recruited in their construction, so that what starts as an introject becomes part of a coping mode, and so of the self. In parent modes and in overcontrollers, the messages are self-directed, but in modes like "scolding overcontroller" or "bully and attack," they are turned on others, and incorporate elements from parent introjects. Knowing the source of the mode helps the therapist determine which strategy will be most helpful therapeutically.

Read more about this selection, and watch the interview with David: OVERCONTROLLER MODE

Another selection at the conference for

Saturday Early Afternoon, July 2nd from 2:30 to 4:00 is:

"Schema Mode Inventory (SMI): What Does It Measure, and Does It Matter?"

    An interview with Eamon Smith

    - Click picture above to see interview -

Few studies have examined the factor structure of the Schema Mode Inventory (SMI), and specifically the theorized category structure of child, parent, and coping modes. This study presents an analysis of the factor structure, internal reliability, and inter-correlations among individual modes and measures of psychological distress and well-being.

In this interview by Travis Atkinson, Eamon Smith gives a sneak peak of his hot topic, hinting at some of the results of his study that lead to some provocative suggestions that may influence clinical work. Read more about this hot topic, one of five hot topics presented as one of your selections during the Early Afternoon Session on Saturday, July 2nd in Vienna: MEASURING THE SMI

One of your selections at the conference for

Saturday Morning, July 2nd from 11:00 to 12:30 is:

"Cluster-C: From Addiction to Connection. Working with the Self-Soother or Self-Stimulator in Cluster-C Patients: the Hidden Addiction Mode"

An interview with Truus Kersten and Guido Sijbers

    - Click pictures above to see interview -

Join Truus Kersten and Guido Sijbers as they dive into the hidden addiction mode: the self-soother in Cluster-C Personality Disorders. In this interview by Travis Atkinson, they give a sneak peak of their workshop, which focuses on the specific characteristics of this mode, and the differences with other avoidant coping modes. They will explain how the self-soother and self-stimulator modes can be observed in and outside the therapy session. Truus and Guido also will give a short introduction of the core elements of evidence-based addiction treatment (CBT), and suitable schema therapy techniques.

Truus and Guido will argue that the self-soother can be a hidden mode, illustrated by case examples of Cluster C-patients in different treatment settings, including general mental health, addiction, and forensic settings.

"Utilizing the mode model to effectively meet world-wide, ever-shrinking psychotherapy session allowances: can schema therapy be relatively brief?"

    An interview with Joan Farrell

    - Click picture above to see interview -

Watch a "sneak peak" interview with Joan Farrell, previewing her symposium that she will cochair with Jeff Young. The symposium will address the development and testing of time-limited schema therapy treatment programs that combine group therapy with a limited number of individual therapy sessions. Can this treatment protocol help produce results that are both effective and safe?

Schema therapy is generally seen as a long-term treatment, not usually considered for limited session numbers of 20 or 30 group therapy sessions, and 10 to 12 individual therapy sessions. Some people question whether it is even safe to include the essential experiential work of schema therapy within the confines of brief treatment.

Answering the key questions of effectiveness and safety, the symposium brings together schema therapists from the United States, Australia, and the Netherlands who work with time-limited schema therapy treatments. Each discussant will present the protocols they are testing, along with preliminary results for a variety of disorders, including: borderline personality disorder, avoidant personality disorder, mixed personality disorder, and complex trauma, working in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

    Chairpersons: Joan Farrell, Jeff Young

Joan Farrell: a brief, trans-diagnostic 'Foundation Treatment Program of Schema Therapy' using the Mode Model and combinations of group and individual sessions.

Rita Younan: a pilot study of a four-week inpatient program using group schema therapy for adults with complex trauma.

Sally Skewes: a pilot study using short-term group schema therapy for mixed personality disorders.

Michiel van Vreeswijk, Tamara May, Ida Shaw, Rachel Samsonadditional speakers.

Wiener Staatsoper: Delight Your Eyes and Ears

One of the World's Great Opera Venues: construction of this Neo-Renaissance State Opera House began in 1861, and opened in 1869 with Mozart's Don Giovanni, securing the title "heart of the music world" for Vienna. The State Opera House was the first of the grand buildings constructed on the Ringstrasse in Vienna. After being nearly destroyed by World War II bombs, it reopened in 1955 with new technology. From the exterior, the majestic stone survived the war, and is dominated by the original loggia. See the two fountains on each side by Josef Gasser, representing music, dance and joy on the left, and sorrow, love, and vengence on the right.

The state subsidizes the opera company, so both pricey and affordable seats are available. Since the opera company is on summer break between July 1st through August 31st, take in a performance at the beginning of your Vienna adventure. Make your reservation in advance by visiting the opera website: STAATSOPER

Are We Prisoners of Our Personality? Keynote address by Will Fleeson

Can we change who we are, or are we prisoners of our personality? Are personality traits permanent and unwavering? How do schemas relate to traits? Will Fleeson will discuss Whole Trait Theory, offering a detailed model of traits with optimistic evidence suggesting that our personality is plastic, to a greater extent than previously thought. This plasticity provides us freedom to create the lives we want, but also reveals consequences of symptom variability from moment to moment, on a greater scale than once thought.

Will Fleeson is a Professor of Psychology at Wake Forest University in North Carolina, USA. His interests include the nature of personality, consistency, self-regulation, development, well-being, borderline personality disorder, and moral character. Will's studies on the distributions of behavior and their implications for personality won SPSP's Theoretical Innovation Prize, and the Carol and Ed Diener Award in Personality Psychology in 2015.

    INSPIRE 2016 isn't just a conference - it's an experience

Share the inspiration with your colleagues and friends in Vienna

Researchers, clinicians, educators, and trainers who effectively practice schema therapy know firsthand how the results of the model can lead to real recovery in clients, not just symptom reduction. We never want to stop learning, and one of the best ways to grow is through the collaboration with other colleagues. Nowhere is there a better opportunity for schema therapists to gather for inspiration than Vienna this summer for the ISST INSPIRE 2016 conference.

Whatever you're into, we've got a selection for you: We now have the entire program of the Vienna Conference online, with details about each selection, along with bios of presenters, at: INSPIRE 2016. You will see workshops, symposiums, hot topics, case presentations, and panel discussions focusing on how to apply schema therapy to a vast number of populations, with an emphasis on mode work. You will also see summaries of the keynote speakers and pre-conference workshops by some of the key leaders in the field, both from within and outside of schema therapy.

Together Again: If you attend the conference in Vienna, you’ll have the opportunity to meet our Honorary President, Jeff Young, the creator of schema therapy, and Arnoud Arntz, our Honorary Scientific Director, a pioneer researcher in the field of schema therapy. Jeff will be presenting a Welcome Address, and will be participating in panel discussions, including a special Plenary Panel focusing on the role of mode work in schema therapy. In his Keynote, Arnoud will talk about the scientific foundation of the mode model and its effectiveness in clinical practice. During the conference, he will participate in a case conceptualization, symposium, and more. Read the details about Arnoud and Jeff, and the many other distinguished presenters in Vienna, on the conference website: INSPIRE 2016

We hope you take advantage of this opportunity in Vienna to learn from schema therapy’s most provocative and influential leaders, and to contribute to your fellow colleague’s growth by sharing a part of your own experience—a way of learning that only the Vienna conference can offer to so many schema therapists from around the world.

Schönbrunn Palace: the Glories of Imperial Austria

Spend a half day experiencing the Habsburg's former summer home, a highlight for both Rococo romantics and Habsburg followers. This is the top tourist site in Vienna for a reason, since nowhere is the history of imperial Austria more prominent. Designed by Johann Bernard Fischer von Erlach in 1696, with significant alterations for Maria Theresa 40 years later, this is the Habsburg summer residence that lies within the Vienna city limits. Take time to wander through the beautiful grounds, open from dawn to dusk. Gather more inspiration as you look out from the beautiful vistas inside the palace that Maria Theresa, Napoléon, and Franz Josef viewed. Schema Therapy Bulletin

    March 2016: Schema Couples Therapy

“We are afraid to care too much, for fear that the other person does not care at all” - Eleanor Roosevelt

Few intimate relationships commence and develop with the prospect thoughts of tough times ahead, however conflict, challenges and emotional pain are often side effects from are a natural accompaniment to being close to someone.

At the centre of our psychological makeup lies vulnerability, and interpersonal relationships are often where human beings feel that vulnerability. Often the epicentre of vulnerability is observed in the couples relationship, where feelings are magnified by love, romantic bonds, family and ties.

Dysfunctional schemas and modes can be perpetuated by unhealthy, relationships or healed and transformed by healthy and satisfying ones. More recently, the complex interplay between 2 people and their history has become a focus of Schema Therapy. This model suggests ways to explain, improve and resolve some of the obstacles to successful relationships, through its focus on meeting basic human needs. The basic human need to feel safe, secure, connected and cared about,  and the factors that interfere with getting those needs met in healthy and adaptive ways, are explored in this issue.

    Chris Hayes (Australia)

    FEATURE ARTICLES INSIDE MARCH'S ISSUE

    Mode TrackingSM with Couples

by Chiara Simeone DiFrancesco, Ph.D.  (USA)

Mode TrackingSM and Need TalkSM are service marks created by the author and belonging to Dialog International Press, LLC

What is Mode TrackingSM and how does it work? Mode TrackingSM comes from the conceptualization of Schema Therapy. It involves the activation of the developmental history of a person, particularly in their childhood. Because we do not live in a perfect world, most children have at least some of their core needs unmet. How core needs are or are not met will impact the individual’s emotional development and their capacity for connection with others. The vantage point of adulthood does not necessarily bring recognition of the lessons learned in childhood, and the consequent formation of early maladaptive schemas (schemas).  Schemas are complex patterns that arouse the autonomic nervous system into a familiar way of coping that maintains the unmet need. These schemas can generally be classified into 18 different patterns. This helps us have some meta-awareness of their activation.

One can track the activation of the schemas like pistons firing in an engine. Together they more or less, depending on their state of repair, get the car moving.  When schemas are activate, often many of them in rapid succession, people exhibit schema modes. We can observe this from a three-dimensional perspective of core emotions activated (Child Modes), the cognitively mediated “voice in one’s head” (Parent Modes) providing commentary about self and others, and the actual ensuing behaviors (Coping Modes). These layers can be diagrammed in a Mode Map or Mode Cycle Clashcard. They can also be experienced through the exercise of placing the modes in chairs, as their layers are “peeled off” like thin onion skins occurring at some moments nanosecond by nanosecond. MODE TRACKING

A Schema Therapy Approach to Affairs

by Professor Bruce A Stevens, PhD (Australia)

Affairs are often part of the breakdown of relationships. Sadly, it seems that few people have much psychological insight into what happened or are wiser after the event. ST can help us to understand and possibly find some resources to deal with this common challenge in couple counseling.

Almost all people enter a romantic relationship, whether marriage or living together, with a conscious intention of remaining sexually faithful, so an affair is inevitably a falling from an initial ideal, whether a religious or a personal value. It is usually secretive, guilt-inducing in the person involved and anywhere from infuriating to shattering for the partner who finds out. Although most of our discussion of this topic focuses on the affair in relation to a marriage, the dynamics are similar for an engagement, de facto partnership, or longer term committed relationship. In those cases, there may be less of a public dimension than with vows made in a marriage service, but often there are children involved and the legal situation can easily become entangled. AFFAIRS

Healing relationships: How to extend the mode model into an interpersonal perspective

    by Eckhard Roediger, MD (Germany)

The conventional mode model is based looking at a single person and their biographical imprints resulting in schemas and coping styles. Schemas result from interpersonal experiences and tend to be acted out in current relationships (Young et al. 2003). So there is already an implicit interpersonal thinking underlying the schema model. Additionally, our partner selection is schema driven based on what Jeff Young called “chemistry”: In a nutshell that means that we  choose what we already know and do what we already can. We often end up in what Jeff Young called “life traps” (Young 2012).

Understanding current relations problems including the therapeutic interaction based on an interpersonal schema therapy model seems helpful – if not necessary - to improve them. Such an adjusted mode model for supervision purposes and for treating couples has been outlined (Roediger & Laireiter 2013; Simeone-DiFrancesco et al. 2015). The core concept of the interpersonal mode model focuses on the mode cycles between the coping modes of the partners. Relationships tend to stabilize themselves in a number of mode cycles, in a more or less functional way. HEALING RELATIONSHIPS

Ruptures in the Therapeutic Alliance: Repairing and Rebuilding Trust with a Couple

    by Travis Atkinson, LCSW (USA)

Challenges in the treatment room are constantly present for the individual therapist. These may include obstacles to developing and maintaining a strong therapeutic alliance, barriers to the ability to empathize with the client, and hurdles in working with the client to establish goal consensus and collaboration during treatment. With two clients in the room, double the possibilities for obstacles, and the challenges faced by the therapist working with a couple become more apparent.

Of the many hurdles the couples therapist faces, one of the biggest threats to successful outcome lies in a rupture to the therapeutic alliance. The therapeutic bond between clients and therapist stands out as crucial to successful couples therapy, along with the treatment methods used, the characteristics of the client, and the qualities of the therapist (Norcross, 2011). When tension or breakdowns in the therapeutic relationship occur, the success of the treatment often diminishes, and failure to resolve the ruptures may lead to the end of couples therapy. RUPTURES IN COUPLES THERAPY

The Ambassador Program for the 2016 ISST Vienna Conference

Designed for professionals from developing and evolving countries from throughout the world

    Dear Fellow ISST Members...

On behalf of the Brainstormers and the ISST Board, I am delighted to write you to keep you apprised of another exciting event emerging from the collaborative efforts of the ISST Executive Committee and the ISST Brainstorming WorkGroup...

The Executive Board members have unanimously decided to make possible an opportunity, for a group of specially selected individuals, to attend our Bi-Annual ISST Conference this year.

These carefully chosen individuals will have demonstrated a remarkable enthusiasm for the schema therapy model, combined with pioneering efforts—in their part of the world—to promote schema therapy in their professional and academic communities. We will be extending an invitation for them to join us at this year's Conference as an “ambassador” of schema therapy, representing their country of origin.

The Ambassadors Program will be comprised of a group of professionals, from developing and evolving countries around the world, who have shown enthusiasm for schema therapy through significant contributions in areas such as, academia, research, writing, teaching, and/or clinical practice, and who would not have the financial capacity to join us without our support. Therefore, the ISST will provide 50% financial assistance toward some of their costs as well as free access to the conference and the conference banquet party, held on Saturday night.

The “Ambassadors” will also be invited to participate in a special meet-and-greet session that I will facilitate with other generous volunteers... where they will have a chance to share their experiences with other ambassadors as well as the opportunity to meet and discuss their areas of interest with prominent members of our schema society’s global community.  I am so grateful for the inspiring support of fellow Brainstormers who have volunteered their time and commitment to help out with the Ambassadors Project both before and during the Conference.

We, of course, welcome other members to become a part of this exciting and important addition to the ISST Conference event.  We look forward to offering our ambassadors a warm welcome as we recognize their contributions in promoting and expanding the reach of schema therapy around the world, especially in places where it might be otherwise challenging to receive the formal training without some form of subsidy or scholarship. We look forward to learning more about how the ISST might best help them with their specific needs for further development of their programs and projects.

Looking forward to seeing you once again this year, in the beautiful city of Vienna!

    With Warmest Wishes,

    Wendy

A top activity in Vienna: an extended break at a Kaffeehause

This summer during your ISST conference activities in Vienna, savor the flavor together with a schema therapy friend or colleague of some of the world's best coffee at a cafe landmark with the ritual at a Kaffeehause, where coffee is served from one end of the city to the other. Legend has it that an Austrian spy infiltrated the invading Ottoman armies laying siege to Vienna in 1683, who learned about the Turk's "drug" called coffee. Once the Ottoman armies retreated, the ecstatic Habsburg emperor in Vienna granted this spy his wish: to retain the bags of coffee beans the retreating armies left behind. He took the beans, and opened the first coffee shop in Vienna, giving birth to Kaffeehause.
