A Chartered Consultant Clinical Psychologist with over 20 years of clinical experience, Dr Anne Whelan has worked in a number of inpatient and outpatient settings in the NHS and privately, including in senior leadership roles.
Approaching being an advanced accredited Schema Therapist, Dr Whelan also has extensive experience and training so a solid foundation to deliver therapy integrating multiple therapeutic models including cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, group therapies, mindfulness based cognitive therapy and a psychoanalytic approach.
She works therapeutically across the age range from adolescents through to adults of working age and to older people. She can deliver different styles of interventions depending on the needs of the patient - from brief to longer term work, with individuals, groups, couples and families.
She also works across the range of clinical problems: from specific disorders (e.g. anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD) to wider ranging clinical difficulties (e.g. self-esteem, personality disorder, relationship issues) including where there is no clear focus or difficulty but the person is looking for improvement or positive change.
She has a vast experience of teaching, training, supervision, support and overseeing the work of other psychologists, multidisciplinary staff, whole teams and multiple services.
Her approach is warm, collaborative and person centred. She helps patients feels at ease before embarking on helping them understand their difficulties, the roots of these and the kinds of things that stop them flourishing in life.
Research interests include: well-being and relationships after brain injury; self esteem and self esteem groups; and how to integrate family and systems therapies into CBT.
