"What Will You See+Do in St. Petersburg?"

 Venice of the North

What will you see and do when you arrive in St. Petersburg for ISST Summer School 2015? Lonely Planet and Eyewitness Travel Guides recommend these top attractions:

  • Russian Museum: opened in 1898, one of the world's greatest collections of Russian art
  • Mariinsky Theater: known for its ballet company and a leading opera house, what is more Russian than seeing a ballet at this famous theater?
  • Nevskiy Prospekt: a stretch of St. Petersburg's main artery with a wealth of attractive buildings
  • Church on the Spilled Blood: this winning design was favored by Tsar Alexander III, with spellbinding domes and stunning mosaics
  • The Hermitage: many say this is the greatest museum in the world, with more Rembrandts than the Louvre, occupying an ensemble of buildings, including the gorgeous Winter Palace
  • Stieglitze Museum: this magnificient building was inspired by Italian Renaissance palaces
  • St. Isaac's Cathedral: one of the largest catherals in the world, designed in 1818, filled with hundreds of 19th-century art
  • Cathedral of Peter and Paul: a Baroque masterpiece of singular elegance, designed in 1712, and a must for any history buff
  • Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan: inspired by St. Peter's in Rome, one of St. Petersburg's most majestic churches
  • Alexander Nevsky Monastery: founded in 1710, an essentially Baroque complex is the burial place for many of Russia's leading cultural figures
  • St. Isaac's View: the top viewpoint of the historic center, rising majestically over the city with fantastic views of the river, the Winter Palace, and the Bronze Horseman
  • Take a Banya: immerse yourself in a real cultural experience for the detox of a lifetime, starting in a steam room, having your toxins removed through a sound birch-twig whipping, and then top it off with a plunge into ice-cold water
