    Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Pam Pilkington has graciously accepted our invitation to be appointed to the Executive Board in the position of Science and Research Coordinator.

Pam is an Advanced Schema Therapist who has contributed to several articles on Schema Therapy. Some of the topics Pam has researched include Schema Therapist’s perceptions of the influence of their own Schemas on therapy, the links between Schemas, suicidal ideation, and self-harm, and the adverse childhood experiences most strongly associated with Schemas in adolescence and adulthood. Pam is passionate about building connections between people interested in Schema Therapy research.

Please join us in welcoming Pam to our Executive Board!

    Warmly,

    The ISST Executive Board

    • Due to the special circumstances in Ukraine and the unrequired brutal war and genocide led by Russian Federation against the Ukrainian people, ISST EB adopted special measures and recommendations for our Ukrainian members and Ukrainians who are currently undergoing ST training or supervision.

    • 1.     We recommend all ST certified Trainers and Supervisors to offer free training, supervision, therapy, and rating for Ukrainian therapists. ISST will create a database that will contain all the names of people offering these free services and we will ask all our members who would like to be named in this database to send and e-mail to enroll at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1TlJpFParsqrqTG59KoqfpzLWZuwMHt3Svn8aSWngryY/edit?usp=sharing

    • 2.     Starting March 1st, 2022, all Ukrainian therapists who would like to become members of ISST will be exempted from paying memberships fee for an undetermined period of time.

    • 3.     The certification process for Ukrainian therapists will be exceptional and individual exceptions can be granted by request to the Certification coordinator. Mainly, exceptions can be made regarding the rating process, in the sense that therapists who cannot submit video recordings will be able to submit audio-recordings or role-plays for their certification rating. Also, the speed of the certification process can be discussed to be modified upon request.

    • 4.     All Ukrainian therapists that want to join the ISST Conference in 2022 in Copenhagen can do that for free, either live or virtual. If Ukrainian therapists desire and can travel in person to Copenhagen, ISST can facilitate sponsorship for the other expenses with the help of the other members, who generously offer to do so. We can help with posting the number of such requests and individually facilitating people to discuss privately to arrange this kind of help. The Certification Coordinator can be contacted in this regard and will coordinate this process.

As an international organization, the ISST represents schema therapists from both Ukraine and Russia. The Executive Board of the ISST has the mission respecting humanitarian values and ethics, while also attending to the needs of members.

The Executive Board stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and denounces the Russian attack on Ukraine. Our prayers are with the victims of this unprovoked aggression.

We are taking steps to rally the global schema therapy community to come to the assistance of Ukrainians struggling within the borders of their country, as well as Ukrainian refugees and those in other countries who are supporting them.

We want to make sure that despite the political crisis and the war that started, we are still together at heart, and we stand united and support each other as schema therapists.

Statement on the Passing of Dr. Aaron Beck

    Dear ISST Members,

We all mourn the passing of Dr. Aaron Beck on Monday. As the father of cognitive-behavioral therapies, his contribution to the treatment of patients with mental health disorders throughout the world is unparalleled.

We have lost one of the great pioneers in psychotherapy. He transformed the field with his insistence on detailed treatment protocols; measurable outcomes; and scientific studies to establish the efficacy of cognitive therapy for so many psychiatric conditions.

Dr. Beck will also be admired by those who knew him for his brilliance; his vision and ability to achieve his goals at the highest level; and for his enormous breadth of knowledge and scholarship across so many fields beyond psychiatry.

As schema therapists, we also owe Dr. Beck an enormous debt of gratitude for the role he played in influencing the development of the schema therapy approach. He was the first to introduce the concept of a schema as the core organizing construct in the cognitive therapy model. I borrowed this term from him as the starting point in my attempt to expand cognitive-behavioral therapies to place more emphasis on “deeper”, often unconscious, themes that originate in childhood.

Dr. Beck also influenced schema therapy in less obvious ways. I often observed his unique therapeutic style in working with patients. He would gently ask questions in an empathic, Socratic style - - while also pointing out contradictions between the patient’s beliefs, and actual evidence from their daily life experiences. Watching him eventually led to what we now call empathic confrontation in schema therapy.

On a more personal level, Dr. Beck was my mentor, friend, role model, sounding board, and supporter. I would never have had the confidence to develop a model of my own had he not given me countless opportunities to collaborate with leading authorities in the field when I had only recently finished graduate school. I benefited from our long, private conversations about the nature of schemas, the concept of modes, and even psychoanalysis. We also shared issues from our personal lives with each other, in which he offered me wise, compassionate advice.

Speaking for the entire schema therapy community, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Beck family for their loss. Dr. Beck was a towering figure in our field - - and we will all miss having him in our lives in so many ways.

Peace on Earth. Wonderfully joyous wishes to you and your loved ones this holiday season and the upcoming new year from your ISST family.

    ISST President's Message

As the year comes to an end, many of us have celebrated, are celebrating, or look forward to celebrating Bodhi Day, Chinese New Year, Christmas, Diwali, Gantan-sai, Hanukkah, HumanLight, Kwanzaa, Mawlid, Solstice, or another holiday. Some of us may have also created our own traditions to honor.

As an international community with diverse backgrounds, we deeply appreciate the varied traditions and experiences of our members that enrich all of us. Holidays are an ideal time to reflect on our lives, and to feel gratitude for our journey.

To pause and think about how much life has changed for us this year is bewildering. For many of us, the global pandemic has restricted almost all aspects of what we do. For some of us, it has also provided unforeseen opportunities for newfound freedoms, reminding us even more of what matters in our lives.

Even though our darkest days of this pandemic may lie ahead in the near future, knowing that a light appears at the end of what may feel like a long tunnel is enough to ignite a burgeoning hope for the new year.

As many of us know all too well, the pandemic has thrust us onto the front lines of a growing mental health epidemic. We can be immensely proud of the work we have done as schema therapists, a force for good in the world through our caring, compassionate approach that touches the lives of people around the world.

Most of your clients or patients will never know how hard you work to help them get more of their core needs met. But they will appreciate the difference you’ve helped make in their lives, and the lives of their loved ones around them. Knowing that you’ve played a part in helping make people’s lives better is a powerful reward, and one that is especially important to remember during this holiday season, and throughout the coming year. Nothing else feels quite like it.

As this year comes to an end, our work to support each other as a schema therapy community to help improve the lives of others never stops.

Thank you for being part of our ISST family.

Season’s greetings to you and your loved ones,

    Alp Karaosmanoglu

An ISST Member Exclusive: watch Graham Taylor share some of his vast experience in how EMDR can help enhance schema therapy

Available Now: Watch the ISST Webinar on How to Apply EMDR to Schema Therapy
    Presenter: Graham Taylor

Applying EMDR to Enhance Schema Therapy

An ISST Webinar with Graham Taylor

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) was originally created by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s to alleviate traumatic memories.
The goals of successful EMDR treatment are to help patients adaptively resolve both their traumatic memories and adverse life experiences.
Successful treatment enables patients to relieve emotional distress, to reformulate negative beliefs, and to reduce physiological arousal.
EMDR applies three protocols within 8 phases of treatment:
    1. Past upsetting events are 'processed' to create new associations with a meaning that is more adaptive
    2. Current distressing circumstances are targeted to desensitize internal and external triggers
    3. Patients develop skills to adaptively face imagined future events
Sound familiar? EMDR and schema therapy advance many of the same goals for therapeutic outcomes, but use very different languages in the details of their respective approaches. Seldom do either EMDR or schema therapy refer to each other.
This webinar looks at the commonalities between the two therapeutic models, and demonstrates how EMDR can be applied within the schema therapy model to help enhance results.

    About the Presenter

Graham Taylor studied schema therapy from Jeffrey Young in 1989, while simultaneously learning EMDR from Francine Shapiro. Both approaches transformed his practice as a clinician. Graham started assisting Shapiro in providing trainings in EMDR in Australia in 1992. A year later, he began trainings in schema therapy in Australia.
Graham has several publications in both schema therapy and EMDR. After a long career as a clinician, he now solely focuses on training therapists in both approaches.
Graham is an Advanced Certified Schema Therapy Trainer, and also holds advanced certifications in EMDR and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT).
